Independent Lens Host, Susan Sarandon, on Power Trip

Power Trip had a great run – critical acclaim, awards, festivals and broadcasts all over the world.  But perhaps more importantly, it also had real impact on international privatization policy with special screenings at institutions like the World Bank and the U.S. State Department. That ride culminated in the PBS Broadcast on Independent Lens.

This intro from host by Susan Sarandon was very gratifying for all of us.  For me and producer Claire Missanelli these moments made all the hard work worthwhile.

Power Trip – Pier’s Bill

The film Power Trip showed how corruption in post-Soviet Georgia brought the capital of Tbilisi to a grinding halt because of electricity blackouts. In this bonus scene, Piers Lewis uses his own electricity bill to illustate how pervasive this corruption was in Georgia and how far the damage reached.

When you’re making a documentary, often you don’t know what is going to be important and what you’re going to need. So you wind up following all sorts of characters and threads that don’t lead anywhere and are dropped from the final movie. But that doesn’t mean that part of the journey wasn’t worthwhile. 
 
 
I still wonder if Sandro ever took his boat around the world.

Power Trip – AES – Telasi PSAs

The country of Georgia is doing much better now, but back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, it was in crisis. This was spectacularly manifested with horrendous electricity problems, documented in my movie Power Trip .

But the Georgians are able to find humor in any situation. This included funny little Public Service Announcements produced by the Amercian/Georgian electric company, AES-Telasi, designed to raise awareness about electricity issues.

Here are a few more clever ones that did not make the movie.
